China Politburo Tightens Ideological Rules, Mulls Ethnic Unity Law
China’s Communist Party Politburo convened on 29 August under the chairmanship of General Secretary Xi Jinping to review new rules governing the Party’s ideological and political work and to study a draft law aimed at advancing ethnic unity and progress, according to official state media. The meeting called for strengthening Party leadership in ideological affairs, endorsing regulations designed to tighten guidance over propaganda and political education. Members also examined the draft ethnic unity legislation, which seeks to promote integration and development among the country’s diverse ethnic groups. Against the backdrop of recent floods and other calamities, the Politburo urged “all-out” rescue and resettlement efforts for people in disaster-stricken areas and instructed officials to step up natural-disaster prevention and mitigation measures.
