China attracted CNY4.7 trillion (USD657 billion) in foreign direct investment between 2021 and May 2025, surpassing the total recorded during the 2016-2020 period, National Development and Reform Commission Chairman Zheng Shanjie said at a briefing in Beijing on Wednesday. Zheng added that the nation’s marine economy exceeded CNY10 trillion (about USD1.4 trillion) in 2024, the first time the sector has crossed that threshold. Officials plan to expand innovative marine technologies, strengthen related industries and improve ecological protection to sustain so-called blue-economy growth. The NDRC chief also highlighted broader industrial strength, noting China has remained the world’s largest manufacturing country for 15 straight years. The value added by manufacturing has risen by more than CNY30 trillion annually since 2021, and the output of roughly 220 major industrial products ranks first globally.
