China has rapidly expanded its renewable energy capacity in 2024 and early 2025, establishing itself as the global leader in clean energy investment and infrastructure. Between January and May 2025, China added 198 gigawatts (GW) of solar power and 46 GW of wind power, an amount sufficient to generate as much electricity as entire countries such as Indonesia, Turkey, or Poland. In May 2025 alone, China installed 93 GW of solar capacity, nearly double the total solar capacity installed in the United States during the entire year of 2024. By July 2025, China’s total installed solar power capacity surpassed 1,000 GW (1 terawatt), representing about 30% of the country's total power capacity and nearly half of global solar installations. The country's installed renewable energy capacity reached approximately 2.09 billion kilowatts (2,090 GW) by the end of May 2025, more than doubling the figure at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020). In 2024 alone, China committed $625 billion to clean energy investments, accounting for one-third of global investment in the sector. China is responsible for 74% of all current solar and wind projects under construction worldwide and accounted for 60% of global renewable capacity additions in 2024, far outpacing Europe and other regions. The rapid build-out includes accelerated offshore wind projects and is expected to reduce the marginal cost of electricity to near zero. This expansion underscores China’s dominant role in the global renewable energy transition and its efforts to build the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system.
