China’s state media and local officials are spotlighting new economic and social indicators from the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region as the plateau province prepares to mark the 60th anniversary of its founding later this year. Beijing says protection of the high-altitude ecosystem remains a priority, describing the region as “one of the healthiest eco-environments in the world.” Nyingchi, a southeastern prefecture promoted as the gateway to Xizang, reported gross domestic product of 26.7 billion yuan (US$3.7 billion) in 2024, with average annual growth above 8 percent, according to vice-mayor Li Shijiang. The city attracted 15.31 million visitors last year—generating 13.82 billion yuan in tourism revenue—and handled 6.03 million travellers in the first five months of 2025, up more than 9 percent year on year. Clean-energy capacity has exceeded 460 megawatts, while nine state-owned and private companies have launched projects in hydropower equipment, lithium battery storage, and hydrogen. Local authorities say rising incomes and expanding trade flows are helping consolidate earlier poverty-alleviation gains. Urban per-capita disposable income in Nyingchi reached 49,621 yuan in 2024; rural income climbed to 27,427 yuan. Some 438 villages now earn collective annual income above 50,000 yuan, representing 86 percent of the total, and border counties report per-capita incomes of about 26,000 yuan. Beyond economic metrics, Beijing is using the anniversary to rebut claims of “cultural genocide.” A March 2025 white paper states that 473 million yuan has been spent since 2012 to protect Tibetan intangible cultural heritage, bringing the total number of recognised heritage items to 2,760 and boosting bilingual education, publishing and media output in the Tibetan language.
