Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has experienced substantial economic and social development over the past six decades since its founding. In 2024, the region's GDP reached 276.5 billion yuan (approximately $38.5 billion), marking a 155-fold increase from 1965 in constant prices, with an average annual growth rate of 8.9 percent. The regional GDP is projected to surpass 300 billion yuan (about $42 billion) in 2025. Infrastructure improvements have been notable, with 124,900 kilometers of highways, 1,359 kilometers of railways, and 183 air routes operational by the end of 2024. Major projects during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025) saw planned investments exceeding 400 billion yuan, including rapid progress on the Sichuan-Xizang railway. The region has leveraged its abundant hydropower, wind, and solar resources to develop clean energy bases, with over 99 percent of electricity generated from clean energy sources, contributing to China's national goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. Additionally, the number of trips made by overseas visitors to Xizang nearly doubled last year as the region aims to become a world-class tourist destination. The development achievements have also supported improvements in public welfare and human rights, reflecting China's approach to promoting human rights through development.
