China has unveiled a new weapon described as a 'blackout bomb' or graphite bomb, capable of disabling enemy power infrastructure including power plants and transmission lines. The weapon, showcased in an animated video released by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, is a land-launched projectile that disperses carbon filaments mid-air to disrupt electrical grids and cause blackouts over an area of approximately 10,000 square meters (about 2.5 acres). The bomb weighs around 490 to 1,080 pounds and carries 90 cylindrical submunitions designed to incapacitate power systems within its strike zone. It reportedly has an operational range of up to 180 miles. The weapon is intended to target critical infrastructure and could potentially cause a total blackout in the affected area. The South China Morning Post and other media outlets have reported on the bomb's capability to cause massive power outages, highlighting its strategic use in scenarios such as conflict over Taiwan. This development marks a significant advancement in China's non-lethal military technology aimed at crippling enemy energy networks.
