China and the United States have agreed to widen communication channels "at all levels" and to seek additional areas of cooperation, China Central Television reported on 11 July. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on 23 July that delegations from both countries will hold economic and trade talks from 27 to 30 July and will continue discussions under terms endorsed by the two presidents during their 5 June phone call. Foreign-ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun urged Washington to pursue negotiations based on equality, respect and mutual benefit, adding that Beijing wants the dialogue to foster stable and sustainable ties. The meetings will be the first formal engagement since the United States imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese imports in April.
