Game Science Unveils ‘Black Myth: Zhong Kui’ After Wukong’s Record Sales
Chinese studio Game Science has announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the second entry in its Black Myth franchise, during Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne. The single-player action-RPG centres on Zhong Kui, the ghost-banishing deity of Chinese folklore, and is still in early development with no release window disclosed. A computer-generated teaser shown at the event accumulated more than 10 million views within hours, underlining strong interest in the follow-up. The sequel follows the blockbuster performance of 2024’s Black Myth: Wukong, which Game Science says shifted over 20 million copies on Steam in its first month and generated roughly USD 961 million in revenue. Wukong’s rapid sales—10 million in the first three days alone—have encouraged Chinese developers and investors to fund big-budget titles aimed at the global market. Chief executive Feng Ji said the studio opted for a new protagonist and gameplay systems rather than immediate downloadable content for Wukong, arguing that a fresh instalment allows the team to “boldly experiment” while keeping the series on a staggered development cycle. Game Science added that Wukong will return in future projects once the sequel is complete.
