India and China agreed on Tuesday to resume direct passenger flights "at the earliest" and update their bilateral Air Services Agreement, the Indian foreign ministry said after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded a two-day visit to New Delhi. The two sides will also ease visa procedures, reopen the Lipulekh, Shipki La and Nathu La mountain passes for trade, and allow larger groups of Indian pilgrims to travel to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Beyond connectivity, the neighbours pledged to "facilitate trade and investment flows through concrete measures" and voiced mutual support for each other’s upcoming BRICS presidencies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Wang, underscoring what New Delhi called the need for "stable, predictable and constructive" ties between Asia’s two largest economies. On the disputed Himalayan frontier, the diplomats announced a slate of confidence-building steps, including the creation of an expert group under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination to pursue an "early harvest" on boundary delimitation and a revived General Level Mechanism that will meet separately for the western (Ladakh), eastern and middle sectors. Both capitals said the measures are aimed at regularising border management and reducing the risk of flare-ups. The initiatives mark the most extensive thaw in relations since a deadly 2020 clash left 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers dead and halted commercial flights. While no timeline was given for either troop disengagement or the restart of air links, officials said follow-up meetings would be held in China in 2026 to sustain the momentum.
