India Sees US Trade Deal by October as China Envoy Visits

India’s Commerce Secretary said New Delhi is “fully engaged” in negotiations for a trade agreement with the United States and expects the talks to conclude between September and October. Discussions are taking place at multiple levels, according to several statements on 14 August. The official also signaled a thaw in economic relations with Beijing, reporting that trade with China is showing positive momentum. On the same day, Beijing dispatched its lead diplomat to India, underscoring efforts by both capitals to stabilise ties even as Washington’s 145% tariff on Chinese goods remains in force.
