President Donald Trump said the United States is "negotiating with India right now" on a trade agreement and expects a final outcome could be known by the end of this week. He did not disclose details of the talks or the issues still to be resolved. Trump’s latest timetable follows a progression of statements over the past six weeks. On 18 June he said Washington was "going to make" a trade deal with New Delhi, and on 16 July he said the two sides were "nearing" an agreement. A deal with India would mark a significant shift in U.S. trade policy as the administration looks to diversify supply chains after imposing a 145% tariff on Chinese goods in April. India, which has sought greater access to U.S. markets for its technology and pharmaceutical sectors, has not publicly commented on the status of the negotiations.
