PayPal Holdings Inc. unveiled “PayPal World,” a global platform designed to let users of domestic digital wallets pay merchants and individuals across borders without opening new accounts. The system will make the company’s own PayPal and Venmo wallets interoperable with leading payment networks in key growth markets. Initial partners include India’s NPCI International Payments Ltd., operator of the Unified Payments Interface; Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s Tenpay Global, which runs Weixin (WeChat) Pay in China; and Latin America’s Mercado Pago, part of MercadoLibre. PayPal said the platform will go live later this year and will add more wallets over time. The company estimates PayPal World could give nearly two billion consumers and businesses access to seamless cross-border transactions. Users traveling abroad, for example, will be able to scan local Weixin Pay QR codes with PayPal or Venmo, while Indian shoppers buying from U.S. websites can check out in their existing UPI wallets. “PayPal World is a first-of-its-kind payments ecosystem that connects many of the world’s largest wallets on a single platform,” Chief Executive Officer Alex Chriss said, calling the service a potential “game changer” for global commerce. The scale of the partner networks underscores the opportunity. UPI accounted for roughly 85 % of India’s retail digital-payment volume, processing about $238 billion in June alone, while Mercado Pago handled $58.3 billion in total payment volume during the first quarter of 2025. PayPal is betting that tapping such pools of users will expand its share of the fast-growing international payments market.

If I understand correctly, PayPal $PYPL users will be able to make offline payments using QR codes from Mercado Pago, UPI, and Weixin Pay. That kind of creates a real alternative to cards when traveling, doesn’t it? https://t.co/kfyWoZsORj https://t.co/b18iI2141Z
