Donald Trump said he had not decided whether to extend a self-imposed deadline for reaching a trade accord with China, telling reporters on 11 August, “We’ll see what happens with the deadline.” Trump added that Chinese negotiators had been “dealing nicely,” offering a cautiously positive assessment of the discussions but giving no indication that the steep U.S. tariffs that took effect earlier this year would be rolled back without a deal.
