The United States has imposed sanctions on a China-based firm and charged seven Chinese nationals for their involvement in a sophisticated cyberespionage operation targeting the U.S. energy industry and other critical infrastructure. The firm, identified as a front for China's Ministry of State Security, is accused of attempting to implant malware into American electric grids, water systems, and other vital sectors. The individuals charged are part of a hacking group known as APT31, which has been active for approximately 14 years, engaging in global spying activities against U.S. and foreign businesses and critics for about 14 years. The U.S. Treasury Department's actions aim to counter the threats posed by these cyberattacks to national security.
