Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made back-to-back stops in Kabul and Islamabad this week, using the visits to press Afghanistan and Pakistan to tighten political, economic and security coordination with Beijing. In Kabul on 20 August he co-chaired the sixth China-Afghanistan-Pakistan Foreign Ministers’ Dialogue with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts, calling for “all-level” exchanges, stronger law-enforcement cooperation and a joint front against trans-national militant groups, including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement. Wang held separate meetings with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund and Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani. Afghan leaders said the country would not allow its territory to be used to threaten China and reiterated interest in Chinese investment. Talks also covered Kabul’s potential participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, expanded mineral exploration—including copper and other strategic metals—and the resumption of border patrols in the Wakhan corridor. Arriving later on 21 August in Islamabad, Wang opened the sixth Pakistan-China Strategic Dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. The two sides discussed an “upgraded” China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, third-party participation in the ML-1 railway and events marking 75 years of bilateral relations. Wang said Beijing welcomes deeper trade and investment links while urging both neighbours to build a regional security architecture that resists external interference.
