YunHe Wang, a 35-year-old Chinese national, has been arrested for his role in creating and managing the 911 S5 botnet, a large network of hijacked computer devices used for cyber attacks and fraud. The botnet compromised millions of Windows computers worldwide and facilitated crimes including child exploitation, identity theft, and fraud worth billions of dollars. Wang allegedly made $99 million by selling access to these compromised computers to cybercriminals. The arrest was part of 'Operation Endgame,' the largest law enforcement operation ever against botnets, which involved international cooperation and led to the dismantling of the botnet and the seizure of millions in assets, including sports cars. The operation also resulted in the takedown of over 100 servers and the arrest of four individuals in Armenia and Ukraine. Additionally, $169 million in Bitcoin connected to the botnet was discovered by the blockchain forensics firm Chainalysis. A newly unsealed 22-page indictment against Wang was revealed, and Europol seized over 2,000 domains as part of the crackdown.
