Colombian senator and presidential contender Miguel Uribe Turbay died early Monday, two months after he was shot during a campaign rally in Bogotá, the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá confirmed. The hospital said the 39-year-old passed away at 1:56 a.m. following an overnight deterioration that clinicians could not reverse. Uribe was attacked on 7 June while addressing supporters in the capital’s Modelia neighborhood, sustaining three gunshot wounds—two to the head and one to the leg. He underwent multiple surgeries and remained in intensive care. On 9 August doctors reported a cerebral hemorrhage that pushed his condition back into the critical category, prompting further emergency procedures. The senator’s wife, María Claudia Tarazona, announced the death on social media, thanking medical staff “for their tireless work” and pledging to “carry on for our children.” Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, including messages from Vice-President Francia Márquez, former presidents Álvaro Uribe and Iván Duque, and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, all calling for those responsible to be brought to justice. Authorities arrested a 15-year-old gunman at the scene and have since detained several alleged accomplices, but investigators have not disclosed a motive. Prosecutors say at least six people face charges ranging from attempted homicide to the illegal use of minors in violent crimes. Uribe, the leading figure in the conservative Centro Democrático party’s nascent 2026 presidential slate, hailed from a prominent political family and had positioned public security at the core of his platform. His killing revives memories of Colombia’s era of political assassinations and raises fresh concerns over safeguarding candidates as the country moves toward its next national vote.
