Ernesto Vázquez Reyna, the federal delegate of Mexico’s Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) in Tamaulipas, was killed Monday evening in Reynosa when assailants hurled a grenade at the SUV in which he was travelling and then opened fire as the vehicle burned, according to state and federal authorities. Video circulating on social media shows Vázquez exiting the black Cadillac Escalade after the initial blast before being shot at close range outside the Hotel Engrei on Bulevar Miguel Hidalgo, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. Forensic teams later cordoned off the area as the charred vehicle was removed. The Tamaulipas state prosecutor’s office said it is working with the FGR to determine whether the ambush was a targeted assassination. Shortly after the attack, sporadic gunfire and road blockades were reported in several neighbourhoods of Reynosa, prompting a deployment of federal and state security forces. No group has claimed responsibility and officials have not disclosed a possible motive. The killing of Vázquez, the FGR’s highest-ranking official in the state, underscores the persistent security challenges in Tamaulipas, one of Mexico’s most violent border regions.
