American Express reported its second-quarter 2025 earnings, surpassing analyst expectations with an adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of $4.08 compared to the estimated $3.87. The company's revenue reached $17.86 billion, up 9% year-over-year, exceeding the anticipated $17.70 billion. Card member spending hit a record $416.3 billion, a 7% increase from the previous year. Net income stood at $2.89 billion, slightly lower than the prior year's $3.02 billion, but EPS growth was 17% excluding a prior-year gain from the sale of Accertify. The increase in revenue was driven in part by a 20% rise in card fees. American Express reaffirmed its full-year guidance, projecting EPS between $15.00 and $15.50 and revenue growth of 8% to 10%. The company also noted increased provisions for credit losses totaling $1.4 billion and plans to update its Platinum card amid rising competition in the premium card segment. Shares of American Express rose modestly following the earnings announcement.
