American Express Co. posted stronger-than-expected second-quarter results, with earnings per share rising to $4.08 from $3.49 a year earlier and topping the $3.87 consensus estimate. Revenue advanced 9% to $17.86 billion, also ahead of forecasts. Spending on the company’s cards and related products climbed to a record $416.3 billion, up 7% year on year, supporting the top-line gain. The solid volume offset higher operating costs of $12.90 billion and a $1.4 billion provision for credit losses. The New York-based lender maintained its full-year outlook, still projecting earnings of $15 to $15.50 a share and revenue growth of 8% to 10%.
