Stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder rewrote South Africa’s record books on Monday, finishing unbeaten on 367 as the Proteas piled up 626 for five before declaring at lunch on the second day of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. Mulder reached his triple century in just 297 deliveries, the second-quickest in Test history, and became only the second South African—after Hashim Amla—to hit 300. His eventual 367 eclipsed Amla’s national mark of 311* and left him 34 runs shy of Brian Lara’s world record 400* when he called an end to the innings. Mulder, elevated to the captaincy after Keshav Maharaj’s injury, walked in at 24 for two and batted for 334 balls, striking 49 fours and four sixes. He shared stands of 184 with David Bedingham and 217 with teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius to drive South Africa to their highest total against Zimbabwe. The declaration paid immediate dividends as the home side slumped to 30 for three within the first hour of their reply. The visitors already hold a 1–0 advantage after a 328-run victory in last week’s series opener, a match in which Maharaj became the first South African spinner to claim 200 Test wickets and Zimbabwe’s Sean Williams counter-punched with 137. South Africa need seven further wickets to secure the series, while Zimbabwe must negotiate an imposing deficit merely to force the contest into a fourth day.
