Police in Fairmont, West Virginia have released body-camera video and a booking photo from Mary Lou Retton’s 17 May arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence. The footage, made public on 8–9 July, shows the 57-year-old Olympic gymnastics champion appearing dazed as officers administer a series of field sobriety tests in an AutoZone parking lot after reports that her Porsche was “all over the roadway.” In the 30-minute video Retton struggles with balance exercises, repeatedly detaches a portable oxygen tube and declines a breathalyzer, while a screw-top bottle of wine is visible on the passenger seat. At one point she tells officers, “I’m West Virginia’s first daughter,” and insists she passed the tests; an officer responds that she failed each one before placing her in handcuffs. Court records show Retton pleaded no contest on 10 June to a first-time, non-aggravated DUI. A judge fined her US$100, the standard penalty for the misdemeanor, and she was previously released on a US$1,500 personal-recognizance bond. In a statement through her attorney, Retton said the incident was “completely unacceptable,” accepted full responsibility and vowed to learn from the experience. Retton became the first American woman to win Olympic all-around gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and remains a prominent figure in U.S. sports. She has relied on supplemental oxygen since a life-threatening bout of pneumonia in 2023.
