Whitney Purvis, a 33-year-old who appeared on the first season of MTV’s “16 and Pregnant,” was arrested on 7 July in Rome, Georgia, on charges of involuntary manslaughter and multiple drug offences. Online jail records show she is being held without bond at Floyd County Jail. According to an arrest affidavit cited by local police and confirmed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Purvis is accused of supplying “tranq” — a street mixture of fentanyl and the veterinary sedative xylazine — to 37-year-old chef John Mark Harris. Harris was found dead of a toxic overdose at his home on 16 February. Authorities say the drug combination directly caused his death. The DEA, which coordinated the arrest with Rome police, said the case forms part of its broader crackdown on fentanyl-related fatalities, noting that synthetic opioids now account for nearly 70 percent of U.S. drug deaths. In addition to manslaughter, Purvis faces felony counts for possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance and for using a communication device to facilitate the crime. Entertainment outlet TMZ, citing law-enforcement sources, reported that Purvis has been placed on suicide watch and is undergoing detox in jail. The arrest follows a series of prior legal run-ins and comes just a month after the unexpected death of her 16-year-old son. Court dates have not yet been scheduled, and the investigation remains open.
