A Leon County judge has scheduled jury selection for Nov. 3 in the capital case against Florida State University student Phoenix Ikner, who is accused of opening fire on the Tallahassee campus in April. Second Judicial Circuit Judge Lance Neff announced the timetable during a case-management conference on Wednesday. Investigators say Ikner, 20, used his stepmother’s former service handgun to shoot randomly near and inside the university’s Student Union on April 17, killing dining-hall employee Robert Morales, 57, and Aramark contractor Tiru Chabba, 45. Six other people were wounded in the three-minute attack before a campus police officer shot and apprehended the suspect. Ikner faces two counts of first-degree murder and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder; prosecutors led by State Attorney Jack Campbell intend to seek the death penalty. Defense lawyer Peter Mills objected to the November start, arguing he needs more time to review extensive video and witness evidence. Judge Neff set an Oct. 10 discovery deadline and said monthly status conferences would address any additional requests from the defense.
