A Travis County judge has ruled that Shane James Jr., the suspect accused of a December 2023 shooting spree that resulted in six deaths across Austin and San Antonio, is competent to stand trial. The charges stem from incidents in which James allegedly killed his parents in San Antonio and four other individuals in the Austin area. This ruling clears the way for the legal proceedings to move forward. Separately, a new trial date has been set for Gavin Smith, who was convicted of murdering his family in 2020 when he was 16 years old. Additionally, a judge has reset the trial date for a prominent real estate broker facing felony vessel homicide charges related to a 2022 boat crash that killed a 17-year-old high school student.
