U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said its Boston field office arrested Josue Santiago Perez-Gomez, a Guatemalan national living unlawfully in the United States, in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Perez-Gomez had been charged locally with multiple child-sex offenses and was released by the Portsmouth Police Department after it declined to honor an ICE detainer. The agency described him as a public-safety threat and placed him in removal proceedings following his arrest on Friday. Separately, ICE’s Houston field office reported detaining 356 alleged gang members during the first six months of the Trump administration. The group had entered the country illegally a combined 1,434 times and amassed roughly 1,685 criminal convictions, including murder, sexual assault of minors, arson and drug trafficking. One detainee had re-entered the United States 40 times, according to the agency. ICE officials said the arrests reflect a continued focus on apprehending what it calls the “worst of the worst” criminal aliens. Both field offices urged local law-enforcement agencies to cooperate with immigration detainers and encouraged the public to report suspected immigration violations.
