The mother of the Minneapolis church shooter, Mary Grace Westman, has retained criminal defense lawyer Ryan Garry and is refusing to meet with investigators, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara and statements from Garry. Garry said his client is “completely distraught about the situation and has no culpability,” but will route all inquiries through counsel. Police have attempted for more than 24 hours to question Westman, who previously worked at Annunciation Catholic Church, yet have been “not successful,” O’Hara told reporters on Thursday. Detectives are seeking information about her son’s planning and access to firearms as they reconstruct the events leading up to the attack. On Wednesday, 23-year-old Robin Westman opened fire through windows of Annunciation Catholic Church during morning Mass, killing two children and wounding 18 others—15 of them children—before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot. Investigators say the assailant was armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a handgun. Court records show Mary Westman petitioned in 2020 to change her child’s legal name from Robert to Robin. Authorities have not indicated whether the mother faces potential charges, but legal experts note that U.S. prosecutors have on rare occasions pursued parents in school-shooting cases. The Minneapolis investigation remains open as police seek to determine motive, weapon sourcing and any possible accomplices.
