New York City recorded no shootings and no homicides on 4 July 2025, the first Independence Day without either crime since records began, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said on Saturday. Mayor Eric Adams called the milestone evidence that the city is becoming "a place where everyone stays safe and feels safe all the time." The holiday result caps a broader decline in gun violence. Police data show 397 shooting victims in the first half of 2025, down roughly 25 percent from the same period a year earlier, with shooting incidents falling to 337. Major crime overall slid 6 percent. Tisch attributed the improvement to targeted deployments in so-called Summer Violence Reduction Zones, gang takedowns and the seizure of more than 2,600 illegal firearms.
