At least 50 people were shot across Chicago between Thursday night and Sunday afternoon of the July 4 holiday weekend, the Chicago Police Department said. Six of the victims died, including a 16-year-old girl who was fatally wounded late Friday in the city’s South Side. Preliminary police reports indicate that among the dozens of incidents were at least two mass shootings as well as multiple individual attacks spread across neighborhoods from South Shore to West Englewood. No arrests have been announced, and detectives are continuing to interview witnesses and review video footage. The latest violence brings the city’s homicide toll to 199 so far this year, according to Chicago Sun-Times data. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration said additional patrols would remain deployed through the remainder of the long weekend while the department urges anyone with information to come forward.
