A 14-year-old dachshund named Bam Bam has been reunited with his owner, Angel Santiago, more than two months after the service dog was taken from Santiago’s yard in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood. Chicago police said an unidentified man and woman left the dog at the 16th District station on the evening of Aug. 19, and officers confirmed the animal was in good health. Bam Bam was reported stolen on June 5, prompting an extensive volunteer search that drew international attention and raised over $10,000 on GoFundMe. Santiago, who is legally blind, had relied on the dog for daily assistance and spent weeks canvassing the neighborhood for clues. Detectives are continuing to investigate the theft. No one is in custody, and the pair who returned the dog declined to provide information before leaving the station.
