Newly unsealed investigative records shed fresh light on the November 2022 stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students, for which former criminology graduate student Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty last month and received four consecutive life sentences. In the documents, surviving roommate Dylan Mortensen told detectives she heard a male voice say, “It’s OK, Kaylee, I’m here for you,” moments before witnessing an intruder dressed in black inside the Moscow, Idaho, rental house. Investigators now believe Kohberger spoke victim Kaylee Goncalves’ name during the attack, a detail families say had not previously been disclosed to them. The release also includes digital-forensics reports describing Kohberger’s extensive online activity, alleged fascination with serial killers and a pattern of ‘inappropriate behavior’ flagged by classmates and faculty at Washington State University. In one classroom discussion recorded by police, he argued that victims’ families should decide whether a death sentence is imposed—a stance at odds with the plea deal that spared him capital punishment. Separate state-police experiments timed walk-throughs of the three-story home and concluded the murders could have been completed in as little as two minutes and six seconds. Other interviews describe earlier stalking fears voiced by Goncalves and repeated complaints about Kohberger’s conduct on campus. Prosecutors have not identified a motive, and Kohberger declined to address the court at sentencing.
