Kennedy Kalombotole has been arrested as the prime suspect in the murders of two patients at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), including Gilbert Kinyua in February and Edward Maingi Ndegwa in July 2025. Police investigations linked Kalombotole to the crimes after tracing bloodstains to his hospital bed. Following his arrest, Kalombotole was arraigned at Kibera Law Courts, where the police sought to hold him for 21 days to facilitate further investigation. The court ordered a medical assessment of the suspect, who has been receiving treatment at KNH for various ailments. Subsequently, Kalombotole was detained at Mbagathi Hospital under tight security, although the hospital later declined to admit him citing full capacity and recommended transfer to Mathari Hospital. His lawyers have accused Mbagathi Hospital of denying him admission contrary to court orders, and his health has reportedly been deteriorating. Kalombotole has been charged with murder and is undergoing a mental health evaluation while being held at Nairobi Industrial Area Remand. The family of Edward Ndegwa has expressed grievances against KNH for failing to secure patients, and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has faced criticism for not acting on earlier recommendations from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) before the second murder occurred. Testimonies from hospital staff and family members have been given to investigators as part of the ongoing probe into the incidents.
