Ford Motor Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley has warned that artificial intelligence could “literally” replace half of all U.S. white-collar workers, underscoring a sharp shift in how major corporations talk about the technology’s labor impact. Speaking with biographer Walter Isaacson at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Farley said AI would have an “asymmetric” effect on the economy and “leave a lot of white-collar people behind,” adding that businesses and policymakers have yet to outline how to help displaced employees. Farley’s remarks align with a growing chorus from corporate leaders. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy recently told staff the company expects a smaller office workforce as automation expands, while JPMorgan Chase and other large employers have also signaled that AI adoption will cut head-count in coming years, the Wall Street Journal reported. Outside the industrial sector, Anthropic co-founder Dario Amodei has projected that rapid automation could push U.S. unemployment to 10%–20%. The warnings highlight mounting concern that AI’s productivity gains may be paired with significant job disruption across large swaths of the professional labor market.
