Microsoft and UAE-based AI firm G42 have announced a $1 billion investment in Kenya's digital ecosystem. This initiative includes the construction of a state-of-the-art geothermal-powered data center, which will serve as the basis for a new Microsoft Azure region in East Africa. The data center is expected to open in about two years and will leverage Kenya's geothermal resources to power AI servers, initially at 100 MW with potential expansion to 1 GW. This investment represents the single largest and broadest private digital investment in Kenya's history and aims to significantly boost cloud computing capacity in the region. The announcement comes ahead of Kenyan President Ruto's state visit to the US.
