OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said the artificial-intelligence company intends to raise and ultimately spend “trillions of dollars” on data-center construction in the coming years, according to an interview published by The Verge on 15 Aug. 2025. Altman said the massive build-out is required to support increasingly powerful language models that, he predicts, will generate more words each day than humans do. In the same discussion, Altman acknowledged that the current surge of investment in AI resembles a financial bubble, likening it to the dot-com boom of the late 1990s. While warning that some investors could “lose a phenomenal amount of money,” he argued that the overall economic impact of AI infrastructure spending will be positive, positioning OpenAI to weather any market correction.

OpenAI spending ambition beggars the imagination. "You should expect @OpenAI to spend trillions of dollars on data center construction in the not very distant future," Sam Altman tells @inafried https://t.co/sgaBjrIIZW #AI
