U.S. industrial activity improved in June, with total production rising 0.3% from the previous month, the Federal Reserve said Wednesday. The increase exceeded the median forecast for a 0.1% gain and followed a flat reading in May after revision from an initially reported 0.2% decline. A 2.8% jump in utilities output led the advance, offsetting a 0.3% fall in mining. Manufacturing—which accounts for roughly three-quarters of industrial output—edged up 0.1%, also topping expectations for no change. Capacity utilization ticked up to 77.6% from 77.4%, though it remains two percentage points below its long-run average. Measured against a year earlier, industrial production was 0.7% higher and stood at 104.0% of its 2017 average. For the second quarter, output expanded at a 1.1% annualized pace, underscoring a modest rebound in factory activity despite lingering headwinds from softer capital spending and elevated import tariffs.
