Israel's Leviathan natural gas field partners have signed a $35 billion supply deal with Egypt, marking the largest gas export agreement in Israel's history. The deal, announced by NewMed Energy, one of the three co-owners of the Leviathan field, will extend through 2040 and involves the export of approximately 130 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Egypt. In the first half of 2026, exports are expected to increase by 50%, with around 20 billion cubic meters supplied initially and an additional 110 billion cubic meters contingent on expansion. The Leviathan field, located in the Mediterranean Sea off Israel's coast, is a major energy asset for the country. Israeli officials have highlighted the deal's impact on regional security, politics, and economics, emphasizing Israel's role as a reliable regional energy power. Despite political tensions related to the Gaza conflict, Egypt continues to maintain economic and energy ties with Israel to address its domestic energy needs amid recent energy challenges. The agreement also reflects a broader regional energy interdependence, strengthening ties under the Abraham Accords framework.
