President Donald Trump warned on Monday that the United States will levy "substantial" new tariffs and impose export restrictions on advanced technology, including semiconductors, against any nation that continues to apply digital services taxes or similar regulations affecting American technology firms. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said he had "put all countries with digital taxes, legislation, rules or regulations on notice," asserting that such measures discriminate against companies such as Apple, Meta Platforms and Alphabet. He added that Washington would block shipments of "highly protected technology and chips" in addition to raising duties on the offending countries’ exports to the U.S. Several economies, particularly in Europe, have either enacted or proposed taxes and regulations aimed at large online platforms, including the European Union’s Digital Markets Act. Trump’s threat, which he described as potentially the "largest tariffs to date," heightens the prospect of a new round of trade friction that could reverberate through global semiconductor supply chains and cross-border digital commerce.
