Former U.S. President Donald Trump said Chinese electric vehicles are effectively barred from the United States because of the steep tariffs Washington imposed earlier this year, adding that he does not want China "destroying" the domestic auto industry. The 145% levy on Chinese goods, introduced on 9 April, has been a central element of the Biden administration’s trade stance toward Beijing and is now a signature talking point for Trump as the 2026 campaign cycle intensifies. Speaking on 14 August, Trump added that he "doesn't like losing business to China" and warned Beijing against undermining U.S. carmakers. In the same remarks, he praised Nvidia’s new Blackwell semiconductor, highlighting the chip’s potential to keep American technology at the forefront of artificial-intelligence computing.
