A series of federal court rulings have blocked key executive orders issued by former President Donald Trump related to voting and citizenship. In June 2025, a federal judge blocked Trump's executive order that required proof of U.S. citizenship for voters in federal elections and limited the counting of late mail-in ballots. This order aimed to impose stricter verification measures on voter registration. Subsequently, in July 2025, a New Hampshire judge paused Trump's executive order targeting birthright citizenship, which sought to end automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrant parents. This pause followed a ruling by a federal appeals court that declared the birthright citizenship order unconstitutional and blocked its enforcement nationwide. The appeals court decision reaffirmed that the executive order violated constitutional protections. Multiple federal courts, including one in Massachusetts, have upheld blocks against the birthright citizenship order, marking at least the third judicial setback for the Trump administration on this issue within a month. These rulings collectively prevent the implementation of policies that would require citizenship verification for voting and restrict birthright citizenship rights.
