U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said on Tuesday she has revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former intelligence professionals, acting on President Donald Trump’s instructions. In a statement posted on social media and in an accompanying ODNI memorandum dated 19 Aug., Gabbard accused the individuals of “politicizing and manipulating intelligence,” leaking classified material and violating analytic trade-craft standards. “Being entrusted with a security clearance is a privilege, not a right,” she wrote. The list includes several officials involved in the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that concluded Russia sought to help Trump’s 2016 campaign, among them a former aide to then-DNI James Clapper. Effective immediately, the 37 people are barred from accessing classified systems and must surrender all credentials; any government contracts with them are to be terminated, the memo says. Gabbard’s order is the most sweeping action yet in a year-long effort by the Trump administration to scrutinize intelligence officials it says worked against the president’s interests. Last month the ODNI released a separate report alleging a “years-long coup” against Trump, and the Justice Department has created a strike force to examine claims of intelligence community “weaponization.” Democratic lawmakers and some national-security lawyers called the move politically motivated and warned it could chill dissent inside the agencies. ODNI officials did not clarify how many of those named still hold roles requiring clearances, and no criminal charges accompanied Tuesday’s action.
