Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has revoked the security clearances of 37 current and former intelligence officials at the direction of President Donald Trump, according to an Aug. 19 memo from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence seen by multiple news outlets. The order takes immediate effect and bars the individuals from access to classified systems, facilities and materials. The memo alleges that the officials "politicized or weaponized intelligence," leaked classified information, or failed to follow analytic trade-craft standards. It instructs agencies to terminate any government contracts or employment held by those named and requires the return of their credentials. Among those affected is Vinh Nguyen, a former top aide to ex-DNI James Clapper who helped draft the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment that concluded Russia favored Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Several other participants in that assessment are also on the list. The move marks the administration’s most sweeping action against intelligence personnel it accuses of bias, deepening a years-long clash between President Trump and parts of the national security bureaucracy over the origins and handling of the Russia investigation.
