President Donald Trump has taken direct control of policing in the nation’s capital, federalizing Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and ordering roughly 800 National Guard troops to the city under a public-safety emergency declaration issued this week. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that about 850 federal officers and agents fanned out across the District on Monday night, leading to 23 arrests on charges that included homicide, firearms offenses, narcotics distribution, lewd acts, stalking, drunk driving and fare evasion. Authorities also recovered six illegal handguns during the first sweep. FBI Director Kash Patel on Thursday announced a separate overnight operation that produced 45 additional arrests: 29 immigration-related detentions, 16 tied to the city’s violent-crime surge and three firearm seizures. The latest apprehensions included suspects accused of assaulting a federal officer and possessing child sexual-abuse material. Leavitt said the crack-down is intended to last at least a month and signaled more arrests ahead, calling the early results “only the beginning” of a broader effort to “relentlessly pursue” offenders in Washington.
