Last week senior aides delivered a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch seeking extensive materials on eight museums, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the National Museum of American History, within 30 days. The administration’s tactics with universities have included investigations and threats to withhold federal research funds, suggesting similar leverage could be applied to the Smithsonian, which relies on federal appropriations for the bulk of its budget. Civil-rights advocates say the effort risks erasing hard-won historical perspectives, while supporters argue it will highlight American achievements.
