Trump Orders Universities to Disclose Admissions Data Amid Affirmative-Action Crackdown
President Donald Trump on Thursday signed a memorandum directing all colleges and universities that receive federal funding to submit detailed admissions statistics—including the race, gender, test scores and grade-point averages of applicants, admitted students and enrollees—in a bid to verify that institutions are no longer using affirmative action practices struck down by the Supreme Court in 2023. The order instructs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to overhaul the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, broadening its scope and conducting stricter accuracy audits. McMahon must publish new reporting requirements within 120 days, with the first expanded data collection slated for the 2025-26 academic year. Schools that fail to provide “timely, complete and accurate” data risk enforcement action that could include suspension of federal funds. Higher-education groups warned that the mandate could clash with federal privacy rules. The American Council on Education said many institutions are prohibited from gathering race information at the application stage, raising questions about whether they can legally comply. The White House dismissed those concerns, arguing that the Supreme Court ruling bars using race in decisions but not collecting demographic data, and framed the measure as essential to restoring meritocracy on campus. Since returning to office in January, Trump has mounted an aggressive campaign against university diversity initiatives, launching dozens of investigations and temporarily freezing research grants at several elite schools. Thursday’s memorandum effectively extends data-disclosure conditions negotiated in recent settlements with Brown and Columbia to the nation’s entire higher-education sector.
