President Donald Trump said Thursday he will accompany District of Columbia police officers and National Guard troops on evening patrols, an unprecedented presidential ride-along aimed at showcasing his administration’s crime-reduction campaign in the nation’s capital. “I’m going to be going out tonight … with the police and with the military, of course. We’re going to do a job,” Trump told conservative radio host Todd Starnes. The White House confirmed the plan but declined to release the patrol’s timing or location for security reasons. The move comes two weeks after Trump declared a public-safety emergency, placed the Metropolitan Police Department under temporary federal control and ordered an 800-strong National Guard deployment to the city. Guard units from Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia are sending about 1,200 additional troops, according to defense officials. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday that the operation has produced 630 arrests and the seizure of 86 illegal firearms. A White House statement credited the federal surge with a week-long stretch without a homicide and double-digit percentage declines in carjackings, robberies and overall violent crime. City crime statistics, however, already showed a 26% drop in violent offenses this year before the takeover, and local leaders have criticized the federal intervention as unnecessary and politically driven. Trump’s planned patrol underscores his broader law-and-order message and tests the boundaries of presidential involvement in local policing. It is the first time he will appear on city streets since the federal action began. Officials said security precautions could alter or cancel the outing if conditions change.
