President Donald Trump said Thursday he will accompany District of Columbia police officers and National Guard troops on evening patrols, an unprecedented presidential ride-along aimed at showcasing his administration’s crime-reduction campaign in the nation’s capital. “I’m going to be going out tonight … with the police and with the military, of course. City crime statistics, however, already showed a 26% drop in violent offenses this year before the takeover, and local leaders have criticized the federal intervention as unnecessary and politically driven.
