President Donald Trump’s Making DC Safe and Beautiful Task Force has reduced the average time needed to obtain a concealed-carry permit or register a firearm in Washington, D.C., from several months to about five days, according to data the White House shared with Fox News Digital. Internal May figures put the average turnaround for concealed-carry licenses at 4.6 days. The task force, created by a March 2025 executive order as part of a broader federal crackdown on violent crime in the capital, coordinated with the Metropolitan Police Department to combine application categories, open next-day and walk-in appointments, and expand fingerprinting locations. Residents previously waited roughly four months for an initial registration appointment. Although the initiative does not alter D.C.’s underlying gun statutes—among the nation’s strictest—it sets the stage for additional changes. Federal officials say they are studying whether to allow concealed weapons on public transit, enable permit reciprocity with other states, and relax rules requiring holstered rather than purse-carried firearms, steps that would require District Council approval.
