President Donald Trump has invoked emergency powers under the D.C. Home Rule Act to place the Metropolitan Police Department under temporary federal control, deploy National Guard units and federal agents, and direct local officers to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Attorney General Pam Bondi has also deputized U.S. Secret Service and Metro Transit Police officers as special deputy U.S. Marshals, expanding their authority to make arrests for both federal and local offenses. Since the federal operation began on 11 August, officials say more than 240 people have been arrested and 38 firearms recovered. A White House tally released over the weekend cited 52 arrests on Friday night alone, including 28 immigration-related detentions. Multi-agency teams have also dismantled at least 75 homeless encampments and removed gang graffiti from public parks and transit hubs. Parallel to the law-enforcement push, the Interior Department adopted a “no-tolerance” policy for homeless encampments on federal land, requiring individuals to accept shelter or face arrest. U.S. Park Police report clearing roughly 70 camps to date. In a related shift, Police Chief Pamela Smith—retained after the city sued over the takeover—has ordered officers to notify ICE when traffic stops reveal suspected immigration violations, marking a reversal of longstanding sanctuary policies. The crackdown has sparked sustained protests. On Saturday, hundreds—local media estimated more than 1,000—marched from Dupont Circle to the White House chanting “Free D.C.” and confronting National Guard troops outside Union Station and on the National Mall. While police formed perimeters to separate demonstrators from Guard units, officials reported no major injuries. U.S. District Judge Reyes, who heard the city’s challenge on Friday, has not yet ruled on the underlying legality of the federal intervention.
