The San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system launched a new payment option called "Tap and Ride" on August 20, 2025. This system allows riders to pay fares directly at fare gates using contactless credit or debit cards, as well as mobile payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, without any registration or setup required. The new payment method aims to streamline boarding and reduce the need for Clipper cards. Fare inspectors will use devices compatible with contactless payments to verify proof of payment, similar to current Clipper card procedures. Additionally, starting August 26, 2025, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will permit Waymo, Uber Black, and Lyft Black vehicles to operate on Market Street during off-peak hours. This move is part of efforts to expand transportation options and support the city’s recovery by encouraging residents to return to downtown areas.
Starting August 26th, Waymo, along with a limited number of Uber and Lyft Black vehicles, will be allowed on Market Street during off-peak hours. This corridor is key to our city’s recovery, and expanding transportation options will help bring residents back to enjoy everything https://t.co/MKE07Gpk8w
