Fintech heavyweight Stripe is building a new payments-focused blockchain called “Tempo,” according to a Fortune report that cites a now-removed job posting on the Blockchain Association’s website. The posting, dated Aug. 3, described Tempo as a high-performance Layer-1 network and sought a product-marketing lead with experience serving Fortune 500 clients. Four people briefed on the project told Fortune that Tempo is being developed in partnership with crypto venture firm Paradigm, whose co-founder Matt Huang sits on Stripe’s board. The network is designed to be compatible with Ethereum’s programming language, while remaining independent of the Ethereum main chain. Development is taking place in stealth with a five-person team; Stripe and Paradigm declined to comment on the initiative. The move deepens Stripe’s push into blockchain and stablecoins. The privately held company, valued at roughly $92 billion, bought stable-coin infrastructure provider Bridge for about $1.1 billion last October and acquired wallet developer Privy in June. Chief Executive Officer Patrick Collison told U.S. lawmakers in March that “meaningful business interest in stablecoins” is emerging as the technology matures. Adding its own blockchain would give Stripe control over another layer of the payments stack as it competes to lower transaction costs and speed cross-border transfers.
Ethereum absolutely made the right call by prioritizing L2 development on the roadmap by doing so, it gave a way for anyone who wanted to build on Ethereum, and gave us immediate scale which helped preserve Ethereum mind-share now with zk tech rapidly advance, we'll eventually

I don’t see why everyone is outraged over Stripe launching their own L1. They do over a trillion dollars of volume, they’re not indebted to any existing crypto player lmao. Only time will tell if this was the right decision. But it’s silly to think they have to build on an
